Do You Know Your Target Market?

Your target market consists of the people that are most likely to buy your service or product. One of the first steps in creating your online marketing strategy is to figure out who your target market and ideal client is. You want to identify their demographics and their characteristics. Once you have that figured out, you can laser focus your marketing efforts and be equipped to satisfy your potential client’s needs.

Speaking for myself, this was always the part of the business planning that I just did not like or care to do and that I truly did not know how to do. How do I find this information out. Here are six baseline questions to ask yourself:

  1. Who do I want to serve?
  2. What do they want?
  3. What are their problems?
  4. How can I solve their problems?
  5. What’s unique about my solution?
  6. Why should they buy the solution from me?

Once you’ve worked out and answered those six questions, here are a few tips to connect with the people that want what you have to offer:

Find out their age, where they went to school, where they work, how many children do they have, what they like to watch on TV, what kind of music do they listen to, how do they like to consume information, are they readers, do they enjoy video, do they like podcasts, what groups are they a part of… I think you’re getting it… devote some time getting to know the people that want what you offer so that you can serve them better.

If you can get to know your target market like the back of your hand, all of your marketing efforts will improve because you’re connected. You know who you’re speaking to. You know what they want. You know how they want to consume it. You know what language to speak it so that they understand your message. Everything you do can be streamlined and laser focused.

I know this is no easy task. I know that writing this article is much easier than actually being able to follow these steps but it can be done and it can be worked on.
